UK Braces for Weekend Washout: Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warning for Heavy Rain and Flooding
UK Weekend Washout: Met Office Issues Weather Warnings

The Met Office has raised the alarm for significant weather disruption this weekend, issuing yellow weather warnings for heavy rain across large swathes of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Forecasters are predicting persistent and occasionally heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding in some areas, particularly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. The warning comes as a weather system moves in from the Atlantic, bringing unsettled conditions to much of the UK.

Areas Affected by Weather Warnings

The yellow warning for rain covers:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders
  • Strathclyde
  • Highlands & Eilean Siar
  • Northern Ireland

Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota warned: "We're expecting a band of rain to move northwards through Friday, turning heavier and more persistent as it does so. Some areas could see 20-30mm of rainfall within a few hours, with higher ground potentially receiving up to 50mm."

Potential Impacts and Travel Disruption

The weather service has highlighted several potential impacts that residents and travellers should be aware of:

  • Flooding risk: Some homes and businesses could experience flooding
  • Transport disruption: Bus and train services may be affected with longer journey times
  • Road conditions: Spray and flooding could make driving conditions challenging
  • Power cuts: Some communities may experience temporary power loss

The warning is in effect from 6pm on Friday through to 6am on Saturday, giving residents time to prepare for the adverse conditions.

Longer Term Forecast

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, the unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue with further showers and longer spells of rain affecting many regions. The Met Office advises people to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings, especially if planning travel or outdoor activities.

Emergency services are urging people not to drive through flood water and to check road conditions before setting out on journeys during the warning period.
