The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, covering most of England and Wales from Sunday evening until 6pm on Monday. Gusts of up to 80mph are expected in exposed coastal and hilly areas, with inland regions experiencing 45mph to 55mph gusts.
The warning, which stretches from southern England along the west coast to the Manchester area, brings risks of delays to public transport and roads, as well as a slight risk of injuries from flying debris. Large waves are also expected along coasts.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher said strong west or southwesterly winds would arrive at coastal areas in south-west England and Wales on Sunday before spreading inland. The weather is caused by a deepening area of low pressure moving eastwards across the Atlantic.
Despite speculation, the Met Office has no plans to name the storm. Spokesperson Grahame Madge noted that such weather is typical for early autumn, contrasting with the summer's calmer conditions. He advised securing loose outdoor items like bins and garden furniture.
RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis warned drivers to expect challenging conditions, especially on exposed roads in Devon and Cornwall, urging reduced speeds and caution around high-sided vehicles. A brief respite is expected on Tuesday, but further gales may hit coastal areas on Wednesday.
