New weather maps indicate a return of hot weather to the UK in the coming days, with temperatures set to reach as high as 27C and exceed 24C in 15 areas. The warmer conditions follow a period of cooler weather and heavy rain that arrived across the country at the end of last month, after numerous heatwaves saw the mercury climb past 35C.
Cooler spell and thunderstorm warnings
The Met Office has issued several yellow thunderstorm warnings over recent days, alerting millions of Britons to possible flooding and power cuts. However, according to the latest maps from WXCharts.com, temperatures could edge past the mid-20Cs across many areas in a matter of days.
Where temperatures will peak on Sunday
On Sunday (September 6), the maps show England is set to be the hottest area, especially in the south, south-west, south-east, and the London area, where temperatures could reach up to 27C. The Midlands and the north-west of the country are also likely to be just as hot. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, temperatures are unlikely to exceed 16C-17C.
Met Office forecast and areas above 24C
A long-range weather forecast from the Met Office for September 6-15 says Britons can expect "unsettled" conditions, but also adds that "warm or very warm spells are possible." The full forecast reads: "An unsettled period is likely, with many places seeing showers or longer spells of rain at times."
"Rain will likely be most frequent across northern and western areas, while the south and east are more likely to see some drier interludes. There is also the potential for strong, gusty winds, particularly in the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although brief warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south."
The areas in England expected to see temperatures above 24C on Sunday are: Greater London, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, and Somerset.
