UK Weather: 35C Today After Hottest May Night Recorded

Temperatures are set to reach a scorching 35C across large parts of the UK on Tuesday, as the Met Office warns that the hottest May temperature record could be broken again. Forecasters indicate that in southern England and Wales, the mercury may even climb to 36C, following a sweltering "tropical night" on Monday evening.

Record-Breaking Spring Heat

This comes after the UK recorded its hottest spring temperature ever, with sunshine hitting 34.8C in Kew Gardens during the Bank Holiday weekend. The Met Office listed 12 locations where the record was surpassed on Monday, spanning from Suffolk to Berkshire to Warwickshire. Additionally, 97 of its monitoring sites reached or exceeded 30C.

On Tuesday, the heatwave is expected to bring temperatures of 35C to the Midlands, south-east and south-west England, East Anglia, and South Wales. While temperatures will gradually decline from midweek, conditions will remain largely dry with sunny spells, and many areas will still experience highs in the high 20s Celsius.

Tropical Night Record

The UK experienced a "tropical night" on Monday, breaking the record for the highest daily minimum temperature in May for the second consecutive day. At Kenley Airfield in south London, temperatures did not fall below 21.3C, after the country recorded its hottest May day since Met Office records began. The previous warmest May night was measured on Sunday, when temperatures stayed above 19.4C at the same location.

As the heat persists, residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. The Met Office continues to monitor the situation, with further updates expected as the week progresses.
