UK Braces for Arctic Blast as Snow Forecast to Return This Week

Britain is preparing for a dramatic return to winter conditions this week, with weather maps forecasting snow in northern regions and temperatures plunging below freezing nationwide. This sudden shift comes after a period of unseasonably warm and sunny weather that saw temperatures reach 20°C in some areas.

Icy Conditions Expected Across the Country

Meteorologists warn that most regions could experience temperatures dropping below freezing by Wednesday, with the coldest rural areas potentially reaching as low as -5°C. While widespread snowfall isn't anticipated, wintry showers are expected across northern Britain, particularly in Scotland where snow is forecast for the upper Highlands.

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, explained the changing conditions: "We are getting low pressure crossing to the north of us, into Norway, and that's going to drag down northwesterlies and northerlies. It's going to have wintry showers at times, particularly in the north, particularly across Scotland, snow over the Highlands."

A Sudden Return to Winter Conditions

The forecast represents a significant departure from the spring-like weather Britain has enjoyed recently. "We've had a few really nice days with spring-like weather," Dale noted. "But we're losing the temperature profile and I don't think we're going to see us back at the heights that we've had over the last few days."

Dale emphasized that while snow might reach lower areas later in the week, it's unlikely to settle significantly. "Even now, if you do get the blanket stuff, it doesn't tend to last five minutes simply because the sun itself has got enough energy in it to melt it, even on a cold day," he said.

Met Office Issues Weather Warning

The Met Office has confirmed the deteriorating conditions, forecasting periods of rain, strong winds, and much colder air by midweek. Steven Keates, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, warned: "Wednesday could be quite a shock to the system. Temperatures will range from 6°C to 10°C, but it will feel closer to low single figures for many areas in the wind."

Keates added that wintry showers are likely, especially over higher ground in the north, with a widespread frost possible on Wednesday night. "It should be a little milder again by the end of the week," he noted, "with many areas seeing another spell of rain on Friday."

What to Expect in the Coming Days

  • Tuesday to Wednesday: Temperatures dropping below freezing across most regions
  • Northern areas: Wintry showers and potential snow in the Scottish Highlands
  • Wind chill: Temperatures feeling significantly colder due to strong winds
  • Overnight conditions: Widespread frost with icy patches possible
  • Weekend outlook: Milder conditions expected to return by Friday

This sudden weather shift serves as a reminder that Britain's spring weather can be unpredictable, with winter conditions sometimes returning unexpectedly. While the snow isn't expected to be widespread or long-lasting, the dramatic temperature drop will be noticeable across the country, particularly following the recent warm spell.
