Britain is set to be hit by widespread snow covering a 436-mile radius, with temperatures plummeting as Arctic winds sweep across the country, according to weather forecasts. The cold snap is expected to persist for several weeks, with mercury readings potentially dropping to -7°C in parts of Scotland.
Weather maps from WXCharts indicate snowfall on November 29 stretching from Inverness in Scotland to Reading in England, while Wales and Northern Ireland could see heavy rain. Further snow is forecast into December, with up to 50 centimetres possible in Scotland on December 3.
James Madden from Exacta Weather warned that a sudden stratospheric warming event could make conditions even colder. "It is now increasingly likely that we will see at least one to two notable wintry blasts from late November and into the first half of December," he said, adding that the event could significantly increase the chances of a white Christmas.
Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said snow could fall from today, accompanied by gale force winds in northern areas. "Showers towards the north will turn wintry through the latter part of the day," she said, noting that temperatures in Scotland would struggle to reach 6°C. Overnight, cold air streaming in from the north could bring widespread frost and wintry showers.
