Britain is bracing for another round of wintry conditions as new snow maps forecast significant snowfall across 15 cities today. The latest data indicates a substantial weather system bringing snow and rain, with the Met Office issuing fresh warnings for the coming days.
Widespread Snowfall Expected
According to the latest forecasts from WXCharts, using data from MetDesk, a major snow event is developing over Scotland and northern England on Sunday, November 30. Snowfall totals could reach up to 4cm in parts of Scotland, particularly affecting Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow. The winter overview shows extensive coverage across higher ground.
The snow is expected to gradually move southward throughout the day, reaching northern regions and the Midlands. Areas including Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire are considered most likely to receive additional snowfall, though accumulation is predicted to be lighter than in Scotland, with maximum totals around 1cm.
Met Office Issues Weather Warnings
While the extreme cold from previous weeks has mostly subsided, the Met Office has maintained warnings for ice and rain across multiple regions this weekend. The weather agency has activated a yellow alert for the Midlands, warning of heavy rain expected to last for more than 24 hours until 3am on Tuesday.
The Met Office warning states: "An area of heavy rain will move steadily east across the area during Monday. Whilst the rain may ease for a time during the afternoon across Cumbria, another pulse of heavy rain is possible here during the evening and overnight."
Forecasters predict widespread rainfall of 20-40mm, with higher ground potentially seeing 50-80mm and possibly 100-120mm over the Cumbrian fells. Strong south to southwesterly winds are also expected, with gales possible around coasts and over high ground.
From Snow to Rain: Rapid Transition Expected
Any settled snow is unlikely to remain for long, as meteorologists predict a rapid transition to heavy rainfall beginning around 12am on Monday. This pattern continues the trend of extreme conditions that have characterized recent UK weather, including sub-zero temperatures, strong winds and potential flooding risks that will persist into Sunday.
The following 15 cities are expected to experience snowfall before the new weather warnings take effect:
- Scotland: Aberdeen, Perth, Sterling, Dundee, Glasgow
- England: Sunderland, Durham, Middlesborough, Ripon, Lancaster, Blackpool, Preston, Manchester, Bradford, Wakefield
Residents in affected areas are advised to check latest travel updates and prepare for potentially disruptive weather conditions throughout the beginning of the new week.
