The Met Office has extended its amber weather warning for the ongoing UK heatwave, confirming that the hot weather will persist through Friday and Saturday before cooler conditions arrive from Sunday. Large parts of the UK have been experiencing temperatures reaching 40C in some areas this week.
Extended Amber Warning
The original amber warning covered Wednesday and Thursday, but the forecaster has now extended it to include Friday and Saturday. The Met Office warned of "population-wide adverse health effects, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life."
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “We have issued another amber warning for eastern and central England for Friday. As the forecast continues to evolve we may need to issue further updates once more detail becomes clear.”
Forecast Details
Temperatures by day are widely expected to exceed 30 Celsius, with the hottest areas potentially peaking around 38 Celsius in eastern and central England. Overnight, temperatures are unlikely to fall much lower than high teens Celsius, and some places will not fall below low 20s Celsius. These high temperatures will also be accompanied by high humidity.
Cooler conditions will slowly begin to become established from the west following this period, although very warm conditions are likely to remain across east and southeastern England through Saturday, albeit not as hot as earlier in the week.
Cooling Down Next Week
The last hot day is forecast for Saturday, June 27, when the Met Office's weather warnings come to an end. Looking ahead to Monday June 29, the Met Office said: "Fairly changeable conditions at first with periods of rain and showers, and there could be some thundery outbreaks at times."
The best of the drier and brighter weather initially will be across the southeast. Then perhaps a drier start to July for many, although the northwest may still see some rain at times, and perhaps accompanied by some strong winds. Temperatures remain widely above average, and there remains a chance of some very warm or hot weather returning, mainly across the south.
