Storm Dave Set to Batter UK with 90mph Winds and Blizzards Over Easter
The United Kingdom is preparing for a severe weather onslaught as Storm Dave approaches, bringing with it powerful winds of up to 90 miles per hour and hazardous blizzard conditions. The Met Office has issued multiple warnings across the country, forecasting a wintry and disruptive Easter bank holiday weekend.
Widespread Warnings and Forecast Details
From Saturday evening into the early hours of Easter Sunday, Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales, and parts of northern England will be under weather alerts. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are anticipated widely, with exposed locations potentially experiencing winds of 60 to 70 mph. In northern Scotland, heavy snow will accompany these winds, creating what forecasters describe as "blizzard conditions."
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Tom Crabtree emphasised the severity of the situation, stating, "Storm Dave will form and rapidly deepen on Saturday as it approaches the UK from the west. Along with strong winds, it will bring heavy snowfall over the hills in northern Scotland where up to 10-20cm of snow could accumulate, leading to blizzard conditions." He advised the public to prepare their properties and stay updated with the latest forecasts.
Specific Regional Impacts and Timelines
A yellow wind warning will be in effect from 5pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday for North East England, North West England, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, and Yorkshire & Humber. The rest of Scotland faces a wind warning from 6pm Saturday to midday Sunday, where gusts could reach 80 to 90 mph in exposed areas.
Additionally, a snow warning covers Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, and Strathclyde, with accumulations of 5 to 10 cm expected in areas above 200 metres. Temperatures may plummet to 0°C in northern Scotland on Saturday morning. Northern Ireland will experience a 12-hour wind warning starting at 2pm on Saturday, likely causing travel disruption and potential damage.
Preceding Weather and Broader Forecast
Before Storm Dave's arrival, a front will move eastwards across the UK on Good Friday, bringing rain to most areas. The Met Office's five-day forecast outlines cloudy and breezy conditions for England and Wales on Friday, with rain clearing southwards. Sunny spells and showers are predicted elsewhere, turning wintry over northern hills.
The outlook from Saturday to Monday indicates Storm Dave impacting the north late Saturday, with often cloudy skies elsewhere. Sunday will see sunshine and showers, though winds remain strong in the north. Monday is expected to be mostly dry before rain reaches Northern Ireland later in the day.
Residents are urged to take precautions, secure outdoor items, and monitor updates as the storm develops, ensuring safety during this turbulent Easter period.
