The Met Office has revealed that parts of the North East will be hotter than Tenerife this week, with temperatures set to peak on Thursday.
Peak temperatures on Thursday
Newcastle upon Tyne is forecast to reach 31°C, while Darlington in County Durham could see a scorching 32°C. This beats Tenerife, which is expected to max out at 29°C.
The hottest period is likely between 2pm and 4pm on Thursday, with less than a 5% chance of rain all day, offering little reprieve from the heat.
Wednesday's warm weather
Wednesday will also see high temperatures of 28°C with full sun, though there is a chance of rain after 8pm. The warm night will be muggy for many.
The Met Office forecast for the North East states: "Heat peaking on Wednesday and Thursday with further strong sunshine. Cloud and patchy outbreaks of rain then erratically arriving to end the week."
Weekend cooldown
Temperatures will return to normal ranges over the weekend, with highs of 21°C on Saturday and 19°C on Sunday.
The UK-wide forecast shows a north-south split, with rain in the north and dry, sunny conditions in the south. The Met Office warns that temperatures are likely to remain above average, with a chance of occasional returns of hot conditions.
