More rain is forecast for Liverpool today (Sunday, August 16) after a long dry spell. Many regions, including Merseyside, saw their first signs of "much needed" rain yesterday after extreme heat has swept across the country this week.
Cooler temperatures and rain expected
Temperatures peaked at 38.1C in London on Thursday (August 13), making it the fifth hottest day on record for the UK. However, many people were pleased to see some cooler temperatures throughout the weekend. Over the next few days, temperatures will freshen, with some more rain also forecast early next week.
The Met Office forecast for Liverpool today says the region can expect a rather cloudy start to Sunday with "outbreaks of rain and drizzle" expected throughout. The forecaster said: "Skies will tend to brighten up for the afternoon, with sunny spells and the potential for the odd shower. Maximum temperature 20 °C."
This evening and Monday outlook
This evening's forecast continues: "Any evening brightness will quickly be replaced by cloudy skies overnight. Outbreaks of rain will then gradually move in during the early hours, especially in the north. Minimum temperature 12 °C."
Here is the Met Office outlook for the next few days as more light rain can be expected. Monday: a rather grey and damp day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, which may turn heavier later in the day. Feeling rather humid. Maximum temperature 22 °C.
Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday
A cooler and more changeable picture for the middle of the week with a mix of bright spells and showers. The showers most frequent and heaviest on Thursday.
Does this mean summer is over?
The UK has had its hottest summer on record, with temperatures repeatedly soaring to the high 30s, leaving people sweltering in often uncomfortable heat. With relentless days in a country not accustomed to such weather, followed by sleepless nights, many will have been relieved to see the thermometers begin to fall.
The Met Office's long range forecast says there will be more "changeable" weather, with many parts of the UK seeing showers or perhaps some longer spells of rain. Temperatures are more likely to be above normal than below overall, though the possibility of widespread or exceptional heat is perhaps a little lower than in recent weeks.
However, while the temperatures are falling for now according to the Met Office forecast there could be another heatwave later this month as the high pressure could return to the UK towards the end of August - so summer might not be over just yet.
