The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for 'intense thunderstorms' across several regions in England, effective from 3pm to 10pm on Tuesday. The warning covers the east Midlands, eastern England, London and southeast England, northwest England, southwest England, west Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber. Forecasters predict lightning, hail, gusty winds, and up to 30mm of rain in under an hour, which could lead to travel disruption and power supply issues.
Heatwave Continues
The warning comes as a heatwave persists across the UK, with temperatures potentially reaching 36C in southern England and Wales. This follows a record-breaking spring temperature of 34.8C. Amber heat health alerts have been extended until Thursday for several regions, including the South West and London, indicating a likely rise in deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Water Supply Issues
Hundreds of residents in Kent and Leicestershire are experiencing water supply problems due to high demand during the heatwave. Water companies are delivering bottled water and working to fix burst mains to restore normal service.
Advice for the Public
The Met Office advises people to stay safe during the thunderstorms by avoiding outdoor activities, seeking shelter indoors, and staying away from windows and electrical appliances. Motorists are urged to drive carefully and be aware of potential hazards such as flooded roads and fallen trees.
