Met Office names 27 areas for heavy rain on Wednesday

The Met Office has identified 27 areas across the UK that will experience heavy rain on Wednesday, with some regions facing thunderstorms. The downpours are expected to be strongest and most frequent in the evening, particularly across Aberdeenshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and Northumberland.

Weather system moves east

Weather maps from the Met Office show a band of low pressure moving eastwards throughout the day, bringing showers that could turn stormy in parts. The heaviest rain is anticipated across the Northwest of England and western parts of Scotland, while showers are expected as far south as Devon during Wednesday night.

Temperatures on Wednesday will fall to between 12C and 23C across the UK, with the coldest conditions in northern regions. This follows a weekend that saw temperatures peak at 29.6C in Wisley, Surrey, on Sunday.

Unsettled week ahead

The unsettled weather is set to continue into Thursday, with rain expected across West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire. The Met Office's five-day forecast predicts heavy rainfall as early as Tuesday, with a weather warning for storms already issued for Northern Ireland for Tuesday.

Forecasters at Metdesk suggest thunderstorms could be likely in the evening, especially in the northern areas listed. The rain will be a much-needed relief as most of the UK is currently in drought conditions.
