The Met Office has forecast rain to hit parts of the UK on Thursday, after a heatwave is expected to bring scorching temperatures to some areas on Wednesday. The agency is forecasting temperatures in the mid-30s for some parts of Britain on Wednesday, with the heat set to stick around later into the week.
North-south split expected
Chief forecaster Gregory Wolverson said: "By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30°Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday."
However, while the heatwave threshold could be passed in the south, forecasters are predicting a 'north-south split' with outbreaks of rain in Scotland a day later.
Rain on Thursday
Met Office weather maps for Thursday show a band of rain moving in from the west and drenching much of the country, predominantly in the north of Scotland. The east of Scotland near Fife will also see a downpour, the maps suggest, as will the southwest in Dumfries and Galloway. Maps also show spots of rain in Cornwall and Devon in southern England.
The Met Office forecast for Thursday to Saturday this week says: "Scotland can expect heavy rain on Thursday. Turning fresher elsewhere, though still mostly dry, with some warm sunshine. Showery in the north thereafter, with dry, warm and sunnier weather elsewhere."
