The Met Office has issued a series of severe weather warnings for today, forecasting that parts of the UK could be deluged by almost five inches (120mm) of rain, an amount equivalent to a typical month's rainfall. The incoming band of low pressure from the west is set to create treacherous conditions, with a high risk of flooding and significant travel disruption, particularly during the morning rush hour.
Timeline of the Downpour
Meteorologists have provided a detailed timeline for the expected rainfall. In the early hours, weather maps showed intense red hues, indicating the heaviest downpours, across western areas like south Wales and Dumfries and Galloway. By 6am, heavy rain was expected to cover most of Wales, with the most intense falls focused on north Wales.
During the crucial morning rush hour, the brunt of the deluge was forecast for Wales, Merseyside, and Lancashire. By midday, the rain was predicted to spread across most of the UK, with southern areas such as Glamorgan, Devon, and Somerset on high alert for flooding and travel problems during lunchtime.
Areas at Highest Risk
The most significant rainfall accumulations, potentially reaching 100-120mm, are expected over higher ground in south and mid Wales, as well as in parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Cumbria. For context, this surpasses the average entire December rainfall for cities like Swansea (110mm) and Manchester (100mm).
Rebekah Hicks, Met Office Chief Forecaster, stated: "Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary, the largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm through the day."
Ongoing Impacts and Warnings
The heavy rain is expected to be slow-clearing. During the afternoon, the Southwest of England will be particularly wet, and the low pressure will sweep over the Home Counties and the Cotswolds around 3pm. The evening will see heavy rain persist across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and later, across London.
In addition to the amber warning, wider yellow warnings for rain cover the southwest and northwest of England, central and northern Wales, and southwest Scotland. The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts and dangerous driving conditions throughout the day. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel.
