Some regions across the UK are currently experiencing the fourth heatwave of the year. Temperatures are set to peak today (Wednesday) with highs of 35C in southern areas, but the hot weather will not reach Merseyside.
Heatwave hits south, no warnings in north west
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued an amber heat-health alert for the East Midlands, the East, South East and London. The alert came into place on Tuesday and lasts until Thursday, with hot, dry conditions forecast in the south of England. However, there are no warnings in place in the North West and temperatures will remain in the mid-20s for much of the week.
Met Office: Changeable weather for north west
In its outlook for this week, Met Office deputy chief forecaster Gregory Wolverson said: “By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday. Elsewhere, the weather will be more changeable, and the change to cooler, more unsettled conditions will arrive sooner from the north and west, with a mix of sunshine and showers. Across northern areas, it is possible there will be heavier showers with a small risk of isolated thunderstorms through the week.”
According to the Met Office, regions in the North West, including Merseyside, will not reach heatwave criteria this week even though southern areas will see some strong sunshine. In Merseyside, people should expect the weather to be more "changeable" with a mixture of rain, wind and sunny spells.
Outlook for Merseyside and Liverpool
Looking ahead to the end of this week, the Met Office's forecast said: "Thursday will be a fresher day with a gentle northwesterly wind. There will be some pleasantly warm spells of sunshine, though the odd light shower cannot be ruled out. Maximum temperature 21 °C. Friday and the weekend will hold onto a fresher feel. There will be a lot of dry weather with some sunny spells, though one or two showers are also possible."
The Liverpool weather forecast for the rest of the week is: Wednesday 24C, Thursday 19C, Friday 20C, Saturday 19C, Sunday 22C.
