Potential disruptions include damage to buildings from lightning strikes, delays to public transport, localised flooding, and short-term power cuts. The warning follows Tuesday's record-breaking heat, with Kew Gardens reaching 35.1C and Cardiff Bute Park 32.9C, marking the hottest May day on record for both England and Wales.
Health officials have extended heat-health alerts until 5pm Thursday, with amber alerts for the South West, South East, London, East and West Midlands, and East of England, and yellow alerts for the North West and North East. The UK Health Security Agency advises caution for vulnerable groups, including babies, older people, and those with chronic conditions.
Separately, authorities have warned of dangers in open water after several teenage deaths. Recent incidents include a 17-year-old found dead in Pickmere Lake, Cheshire, and the death of Declan Sawyer, 15, at Swanholme Lakes, Lincoln. Police urge swimmers to be aware of hidden currents and underwater hazards.
