Dry conditions are forecast for much of the weekend in Greater Manchester following a period of rainy weather. A thunderstorm warning was issued by the Met Office for the region on Wednesday evening (August 19) amid a forecast of heavy downpours overnight into Thursday.
Thunderstorm Warning and Rainfall
The Met Office said some parts of the UK would have the 'first meaningful rain for a long time' following a prolonged dry spell and several heatwaves. Heavy showers hit Greater Manchester overnight and are set to continue through the day on Thursday. Downpours are forecast until around 2pm when the showers look set to ease off with cloudier conditions setting in.
The thunderstorm warning, which covers the region as well as a large part of northern England, came to an end at 10am. Drier conditions are then forecast on Friday and over the weekend, according to the Met Office.
Weekend Forecast
A mix of sunny and cloudy spells are forecast across Friday, Saturday and Sunday with highs of 18C expected on Friday, 20C on Saturday and 20C Sunday. A few light showers are predicted for Friday evening but the weekend looks set to be mainly dry.
Forecasters and officials warned the downpours this week would not solve the drought overnight following the prolonged extremely dry spell. All of Wales, and nearly three quarters of England are currently in drought as a result of the hot dry conditions.
