Met Office: Coldest Night of Season, Temperatures Likely to Rise
Coldest Night of Season, Temperatures Likely to Rise

The Met Office has confirmed that last night, Sunday, was the "coldest of the season so far," with temperatures dropping below zero across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Monday's Weather Outlook

Today, Monday, is expected to bring "cloud and rain spreading north and west across the UK, replacing early clear spells in Scotland and Northern Ireland." Southern regions will enjoy some sunshine, although cloud and rain will push into eastern areas later in the day, with heavier showers anticipated across the south west.

Overnight, rain will move into eastern and central areas, with more persistent rainfall developing across southern England later in the evening. The remainder of the country should stay mostly dry with clear intervals and localised grass frost.

Tuesday's Forecast

Come Tuesday, October 20, much of the country can anticipate cloudy skies with spells of rain, though the south west should remain drier with some brighter intervals breaking through. Winds will strengthen from the west, making it feel rather nippy.

Wednesday to Friday and Beyond

Looking ahead, unsettled conditions are set to persist from Wednesday through to Friday, October 21 to 23, with showers and prolonged spells of rain affecting all areas of the UK, and the possibility of gales on Thursday and Friday.

In its long-range forecast, the Met Office has outlined when temperatures might begin to climb. Changeable conditions are expected to continue from this Friday through to Sunday, November 1. As a result of weather systems sweeping in from the Atlantic, prolonged spells of rain are expected, heavy at times, along with the possibility of strong winds or gales. "Between systems it will be drier and brighter with some sunshine, but also with a few showers in places".

When Might Temperatures Rise?

At the outset of this period - October 23 to November 1 - temperatures may be slightly below average, but are likely to rise above average later. Then, between Monday, November 2, and Monday, November 16, temperatures are likely to be near to or above average for the time of year overall.
