UK Christmas Weather: 'Beast from the East' Brings -6C Plunge
Beast from the East brings -6C Christmas freeze

A dramatic cold snap is set to grip the UK in the run-up to Christmas, with temperatures poised to plummet by as much as six degrees Celsius. Forecasters are warning of the return of the so-called 'Beast from the East' as a frigid band of low pressure moves in from the continent.

From Mild to Miserable: A Sharp Temperature Drop

The nation is in for a shock after experiencing unseasonably mild conditions. On Sunday, the mercury soared to 11.3C in Swanage, Dorset, and even reached 12.3C in Capel Curig, north Wales, on Monday. However, a significant change is on the way. By Christmas Day, Thursday, temperatures in Swanage are expected to struggle to reach just 5C, with a biting easterly wind making it feel even colder.

The chill will be most acute across Scotland, where air temperatures are forecast to hover around 1C on Thursday and Friday. When the fierce wind chill is factored in, it could feel as cold as -2C in rural areas like the Scottish Highlands and Aberdeenshire.

Snow Prospects and Festive Forecast

The arrival of the Arctic air has raised questions about the likelihood of a white Christmas. The Met Office has indicated that while weather maps show potential for snow in places such as County Durham and Northumberland, the chance of widespread snowfall remains low.

Paul Gundersen, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, addressed the popular query. "There’s a small chance of light showers, which, if they occur, will be a mix of rain, sleet and some snow over higher ground," he stated. "The chance is relatively low as it stands, and there are no strong signals for significant or widespread snowfall."

He urged the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings, particularly for those making festive travel plans.

Regional Outlook and Current Warnings

During the festive period, the slightly warmer conditions are most likely to persist in western parts of Britain. Despite this, even in west Wales, Christmas Day temperatures are not expected to exceed 7C. The day will be predominantly cloudy, with brighter breaks possible in the west and a chance of drizzle in eastern counties like Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

It's not just the cold causing concerns. The Met Office has several weather warnings and alerts in force. Notably, there is a significant flood warning currently active for Curry Moor and Hay Moor in Somerset, reminding Britons that winter hazards come in many forms.

As the 'Beast from the East' makes its presence felt, the UK is braced for a crisp and chilly festive season, a stark contrast to the mild start of the week.
