The heatwave that plagued Western Australia will shift east, bringing days of hot weather and sunshine but also fire danger warnings for the New Year weekend.
Sweltering conditions will hit South Australia, Victoria and parts of Tasmania. Melbourne is expected to see highs of 38°C from Thursday through to Monday, prompting a heat health alert from Victoria's Department of Health for New Year's Eve. Authorities have warned residents in regional Victoria to remain alert for high fire danger levels, with a total fire ban in place for several districts in South Australia.
Sydney will miss the brunt of the heatwave but will enjoy a warm weekend with temperatures reaching 29°C on Friday and Saturday, then 30°C on Sunday and Monday. Canberra will see sunny weather with highs in the 30s from Friday through the weekend.
In contrast, tropical rains will continue to lash North Queensland and the Northern Territory. Brisbane and the Gold Coast can expect a wet and windy start to the new year as a low pressure system brings heavy rain. The Bureau of Meteorology's Jonathon How said the tropical storm drenching Far North Queensland will ease as it moves offshore, but showers and dangerous surf conditions are likely along the coast.
