Weather maps from WXCharts indicate a 551-mile band of rain could stretch from Scotland to Devon on Friday, October 9, with snow also possible in parts of Scotland.
Heavy downpours expected across the UK
A band of low pressure will sweep across the country, reaching as far south as Devon and extending through parts of Scotland as temperatures drop. Forecasters say downpours will be heaviest on Friday, October 9, especially in western and northern parts of the UK.
The unsettled picture is expected to linger into next weekend, with the band of low pressure moving eastwards on Friday and Saturday. Weather maps show green and red hues, indicating rainfall rates of between 1.5mm and 4mm per hour.
Snow possible in Scotland
Scotland will bear the brunt of the downpours, according to the latest weather maps. The rain will also reach large parts of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland on Friday. Temperatures will drop following a recent balmy spell, with cold enough conditions for snow in Scotland, highlighted by a purple hue on the maps.
The mercury reached 26.3C in Cambridge on Wednesday. However, next week large sections of the country could see lows of 10C, with freezing possible overnight across the Scottish Highlands.
Met Office outlook
The Met Office says "a spell of mostly dry and fresher conditions, some chilly nights [are] possible" next week, leading to the downpours on Friday. It also states temperatures will be closer to average for this time of year.
"So, further rain and strong winds at times, mainly focused across the northwest, while southern areas see more in the way of dry weather. Temperatures close to or rather above average on the whole," the long-range forecast reads.
According to WXCharts, the regions of the UK set to be blanketed in rain on Friday, October 9, include areas in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
