The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for parts of southern England, with heavy rain, hail, and lightning expected to cause disruption. The warning covers London, Bristol, Oxford, Southampton, Kent, and Ipswich, and is in place from 10am to 9pm on Thursday.
Forecasters predict up to 60mm of rainfall within two hours in some areas, accompanied by frequent lightning and hail. The Environment Agency has warned that flash flooding is possible, though not expected, and advised people to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit.
Heavy rain has already affected London, with images showing commuters sheltering under umbrellas. The Met Office cautioned motorists to check road closures and be aware of difficult driving conditions, noting a small chance of damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning, or hail.
The warning follows a series of heatwaves earlier this month that brought thunderstorms and heavy rain. Sunny conditions are expected to return on Friday, with highs of 22C and warmer temperatures over the weekend.
