Torrential rains have unleashed chaos in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, triggering flash floods that have left over 40 people missing and caused widespread destruction. The sudden deluge swept away homes, roads, and bridges, cutting off several villages and leaving residents stranded.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to search for survivors and provide aid to affected communities. Local authorities report that communication lines have been severely disrupted, hampering rescue operations in remote areas.
Infrastructure in Ruins
The flash floods have:
- Destroyed at least 12 homes completely
- Washed away three critical bridges
- Blocked major highways with debris
- Disrupted power supply to multiple villages
Weather Warnings Issued
The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for several districts as more heavy rainfall is forecast. Officials warn that rising water levels in local rivers could lead to further flooding in low-lying areas.
"This is one of the worst disasters we've seen in this region in recent years," stated a local government official, who requested anonymity as rescue operations continue.
