Tropical Storm Lala has caused widespread power outages and damage across Hawaii, with thousands of residents left without electricity as the storm continues to move through the islands.
Storm Impact and Power Outages
The storm, which made landfall earlier this week, has brought strong winds and heavy rain, leading to downed trees and power lines. Officials reported that more than 50,000 customers were without power at the peak of the outages, with many areas still affected as crews work to restore service.
Hawaii Electric Light Company said that restoration efforts are ongoing, but some areas may remain without power for several days due to the extent of the damage. The company urged residents to stay away from downed power lines and report any hazards.
Damage and Emergency Response
In addition to power outages, the storm has caused significant damage to roads and buildings. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency reported that several roads were closed due to flooding and debris, and that emergency shelters have been opened for displaced residents.
Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency for the affected areas, allowing for the mobilization of state resources and federal assistance. The governor urged residents to take precautions and stay informed through official channels.
The storm is expected to continue moving away from the islands over the next 24 hours, but officials warned that the risk of flooding and landslides remains in some areas.
