Father and son rescued from disappearing sand bank at Budle Bay

A father and son were rescued by RNLI volunteers at Budle Bay, Northumberland, moments before the sand bank they were stranded on became fully submerged by the tide.

The pair had been cut off by the tide at around 1.12pm on Sunday afternoon and tried to make it back to the shore. Realising they were unable to do so, they returned to the disappearing sand island to await rescue.

Coastguard and RNLI response

Coastguard rescue teams from Seahouses and Howick reported that there were only moments left before the sand bank would become fully submerged. RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station launched their D-Class lifeboat and arrived at the scene.

RNLI Volunteer Helm Tim positioned the boat for the crew to rescue the pair. They were cold and wet but had not sustained any injuries in the incident.

Rescue crew statement

RNLI Volunteer Crew Member David said: "These people were incredibly lucky, they didn't have long left before they'd have been forced to enter the water. Once we had dropped them ashore and turned to leave the Bay their island was completely submerged."

The Seahouses Lifeboat was called out twice on Sunday afternoon.
