Newcastle United duo Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade started for the first time under new Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp as they beat Serbia 2-0 in Munich.
Klopp's first win secured in Munich
Goals from Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz and Bayern Munich youngster Tom Bischof sealed Klopp's first win as Die Mannschaft manager following a draw with the Netherlands and a defeat to Greece in their opening two UEFA Nations League matches.
Klopp, who has returned to management after a two-year hiatus since leaving Liverpool, picked two separate squads for Germany's four matches across this international break and both Thiaw and Woltemade were chosen for the second two matches against Serbia and Greece.
Thiaw impresses in clean sheet
Both Magpies stars started at the Allianz Arena, with Thiaw, who has captained Newcastle in all six matches he has started last season, impressing alongside Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton as they kept a clean sheet for the first time under Klopp.
Meanwhile, Woltemade, who left Newcastle on transfer deadline day to join Italian giants Juventus on a season-long loan deal, started in the middle of a front three that also included Freiburg's Derry Scherhant and Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry.
Woltemade misses gilt-edged chance
Woltemade showed his class in the first half with a clever through ball for Gnabry on the edge of the box, only for the former Arsenal winger to see his goalbound attempt well saved by Bournemouth's Djordje Petrovic in the Serbia goal.
But then Woltemade missed an absolute gilt-edged chance in the second half to move Germany 2-0 in front. Freiburg right-back Philipp Treu whipped in a beautiful ball to the back post where Woltemade had peeled away from his marker and looked certain to score.
But the 24-year-old inexplicably blazed a left-footed half-volley over the crossbar from just four yards out which left the commentator on the UEFA TV feed to exclaim: "That is incredible. How on earth has he missed that?"
Woltemade was replaced by Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jonathan Burkhardt in the 76th minute and it was all smiles as he was greeted by Klopp on the touchline.
But with competition fierce up front he will hope not to squander any similar opportunities should they arise against Greece in Thessaloniki on Sunday as Germany look to get their Nations League campaign back on track by avenging their defeat to the same opponents last weekend.
