A Tesco supermarket in Glasgow was evacuated after a fire broke out in its underground car park on Friday afternoon. The vehicle, thought to be an electric car, was reported ablaze near the Maryhill store at around 4.21pm.
Fire crews respond to car park blaze
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed two engines to tackle the fire, while onlookers saw thick black smoke billowing from the car park entrance. Staff and customers were swiftly evacuated from the store as a precaution against the fire spreading.
One local resident living opposite the store described the scene as one of complete panic. Ryan, 26, an energy consultant, told Glasgow Live: "I was just coming home on the bus and I saw the smoke which looked like it was coming out the roof of the Tesco store."
Eyewitness describes panic
"Then when I rounded the corner to get to my flat I saw it was a car on fire. It looks like an electric car, although I've no idea how it started," he said. "The staff and customers were being evacuated and it was total panic. They are just standing outside now waiting for the firefighters to finish."
The cause of the blaze remains unknown at this stage.
Police cordon off car park
Police attended the scene and cordoned off the car park, compounding the traffic disruption already being experienced during the evening rush hour.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 4.21pm to reports of a car on fire at the Tesco supermarket on Maryhill Road in Glasgow. We mobilised two appliances and are still at the scene."
