Summer is one of the busiest travel periods of the year as hundreds of thousands of Brits jet off for the school holidays. Ensuring you have correct travel documents is one of the most important things to check, including your boarding pass, passport and any additional documents that your destination needs. Passengers can get caught out if their documents don't comply with their airline's rules or their destination's requirements.
easyJet
easyJet states that passengers should check passport, visa and entry requirements for their destination. There is a dedicated check passport and visa requirements section on its website. For domestic flights, photographic ID is required. A child under the age of 16 does not need to provide ID on domestic flights (excluding Italy). The adult they are travelling with can vouch for the child's identity. However, children under 14 on Italian domestic flights must show photographic ID.
Digital IDs are only accepted for domestic flights. For flights between Schengen/European countries, digital IDs are permitted only for outbound travel from the country that issued the digital ID. For all return or onward journeys within the EU, customers must carry a valid EU/EEA/Swiss national ID card or a passport that is accepted for entry into the destination country. Digital IDs are not accepted for international flights outside the EU. All easyJet customers travelling on international flights must hold either a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity Card or Passport, and if required, a valid Visa. Customers must bring the physical Identity Card or Passport with them; a digital version is not accepted.
Children under 13 do not need to show ID if travelling with an adult for French domestic flights (not Basel airport). The only accepted forms of ID to travel within France are an EU/EEA or Swiss national Identity Card, a Passport, a photographic residence permit, or a photographic driving licence. If you are travelling between France and Basel airport, this is not considered a domestic flight route. All customers must ensure their passport is in good condition and signed. UK passports issued after March 2020 may not be printed with a signature, and anyone aged 12 and over must sign their passport to be valid. Some countries require that passports are valid for a minimum period beyond your trip, which can be three or six months. It is a customer's responsibility to make sure their passport is in good condition and to check its expiry and issue date. For UK passport holders travelling to the EU (except Ireland), or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican City or Switzerland, passports need to meet the criteria below. Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland may travel within Europe using a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity Card or Passport Card.
Jet2
Jet2 requires customers to check their latest entry requirements as they may be different based on their destination, nationality or travel document type. There is a dedicated section on the Jet2 website which allows customers to see entry requirements for their specific destination. The website states: "If you are travelling to this destination and you do not hold a full 'British Citizen' or EU passport, it's very likely there will be different entry requirements. We recommend that all travellers check the latest requirements before travelling, which can be found on the FCDO website." The airline warns that most EU countries require UK passports to be less than ten years old and still be valid for at least three months after you come back from your holiday. The Jet2 website has a video explaining its passport requirements, which can be found in the 'passport information' section.
Ryanair
On the Ryanair website, the airline states that it only accepts valid passports or National Identity Cards as travel ID. This does not include driver's licenses or birth certificates. It is a passenger's responsibility to ensure their documents meet requirements. There are different rules depending on destination, so check before you travel. An optional app feature allows uploading visa documents during check-in; otherwise, documents must be checked at the desk, according to the website. Data is handled per Ryanair's Privacy Policy. Ryanair does not accept a driver's license or birth certificate for travel to any of its destinations. It is each passenger's responsibility to bring Photo ID which meets the airline and Immigration Authority's requirements. Ryanair has introduced an optional feature to upload documentation via its app. This will show customers whether they carried the correct documents at the time of departure, to avoid fines or criminal penalties for travelling without the required documents.
