Some users suggested the object could be a camera, a spacecraft, or a helicopter. Another speculated it might be a tower or structure, possibly a relic from a past Martian civilisation. However, several users pointed out that the viral image may have been digitally enhanced, making the object look more defined than in the original NASA version.
Digital enhancement concerns
One user explained that the displayed image was cropped and zoomed from the original, and that conventional photo software applies interpolation automatically. Interpolation is a smoothing process that makes assumptions about pixels, creating a visual trick that makes zoomed images appear smooth rather than pixelated.
