More than 100 leap from blazing boat in Turkey

More than 100 people leapt from a burning tour boat off the coast of south-western Turkey after flames engulfed the vessel during a children's outing. All 115 passengers were evacuated to shore, with 11 taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Fire erupts during popular family tour

The boat, named Imparator, caught fire in the Fethiye district of Mugla, a seaside resort area popular with British tourists. The tour, which runs daily and explores coastal bays and coves, promises children an 'unforgettable adventure' with meals, games, and entertainment.

As the fire broke out, passengers jumped into the sea. Coast Guard teams, along with nearby civilian boats and private vessels, moved in to assist them. An urgent distress call prompted a multi-agency response involving the Turkish Coast Guard, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety, and maritime police.

Evacuation and medical checks

Health teams checked people over when they were brought to land. Officials reported that all 115 passengers were 'evacuated to shore', with 11 hospitalised for smoke inhalation. None were thought to be in a 'serious condition', and there were no fatalities.

The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs did not confirm how many children were evacuated, but it has been reported that several minors underwent precautionary medical checks. The boat's operator said in a statement on Facebook: 'We would like to inform the public that our customers and staff are safe.'

Investigation launched after vessel sinks

The fire is believed to have broken out in the boat's kitchen at around 11am local time in Katrancı Bay, but the exact cause remains unknown. Extensive damage was caused, with images released by Turkish media showing the boat completely gutted by fire. It was later seen starting to sink.

An investigation has been launched to determine how the incident happened.
