Tyne and Wear Metro services remain suspended between Wallsend and Monkseaton in both directions due to a signalling fault. The incident was reported yesterday morning, with bosses later confirming that the issue was "unlikely to be repaired for some hours".
Evening peak suspension
In a statement on Monday afternoon, Stuart Clarke, Infrastructure Director at Nexus, said: "Metro services on our Yellow Line between Wallsend and Monkseaton are to remain suspended throughout the evening peak period (Monday 28 September) due to an ongoing signalling issue. Our engineers are on the system working hard to get this fixed. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the issue, it is unlikely to be repaired for some hours yet. We will update on the timescales as soon as we have more information. We have Metro ticket acceptance on local bus routes between Wallsend and Monkseaton."
Bus replacement and ticket acceptance
Metro passengers are advised that a bus replacement service is operating between North Shields and Monkseaton. Metro tickets and passes are also being accepted on the following bus services: Arriva - 57/57a, 306 & 308, Go North East - 301, 307, 309, 317, 353 & 354 and Stagecoach - 12, 22 & 40.
Engineers on site
Engineers remain on site carrying out further works to fix the ongoing signalling fault. An update published online this morning states that staff expect that services will gradually return to stations this morning into the lunchtime period.
