GB News presenter Ben Leo has issued a worrying weather alert from Mexico City, where England's World Cup match against Mexico faces potential delays due to severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes. Reporting live from near the stadium just hours before the scheduled 1am BST kick-off, Leo appeared soaked as he described the dangerous conditions.
Lightning Threatens 30-Minute Delay
Leo warned that if lightning strikes within 8 miles of the stadium, the match will be subject to an instant 30-minute delay. He stated: 'Lightning is striking above us. You can hear the roll of the thunder as well, sort of making its way through the buildings. I think there will be lightning strikes at kickoff at 1am, so if anyone's waiting up for the game, bear in mind, if there's lightning strikes within 8 miles of the stadium, it's an instant 30-minute delay.'
The presenter, who was getting soaked during the broadcast, added that he believes the game will be delayed. 'I'm going to put my money where my mouth is. I bet this game at 1am UK time is going to be delayed for lightning strikes. I'm not sure how long it will be delayed for,' he said.
Fans Undeterred Despite Weather
Despite the severe weather, enthusiastic England fans who had travelled to Mexico without tickets were seen near the stadium. Leo interviewed a couple of them, highlighting their dedication. Back in the studio, host Alex responded: 'Yeah, great stuff, Ben. Thanks for being there for us, mate. And stay safe.'
The match is currently set to go ahead as scheduled, but fears remain that it could be halted within minutes of starting if lightning activity continues. The incident underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather during major sporting events.
