The European Union has firmly rejected calls to suspend its new biometric border system, the Entry/Exit System (EES), despite mounting warnings from airports, airlines, and ports that it could cause significant delays during the peak summer holiday season. The system, which was fully launched on 10 April, requires non-EU travellers to register their passport data and facial image upon entry and exit from the Schengen Area.
Industry and Political Warnings
Airports, airlines, and port operators have expressed concerns that the EES could lead to long queues and disruptions, particularly at busy travel hubs like the Port of Dover. UK MPs have also warned of potential congestion as holiday traffic builds. The system aims to enhance border security but has been criticised for its potential impact on travel flow.
