A British woman has died after being rescued from the water at a popular tourist beach in Ibiza. The pensioner was pulled from the sea at S'Arenal Gros beach in the village of Portinatx on the island's north coast on Tuesday afternoon.
Lifeguards, assisted by a British doctor, an off-duty Spanish nurse and a firefighter, attempted to save her life. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene at around 5.30pm.
Autopsy ordered to determine cause of death
The Spanish Civil Guard has ordered an autopsy into the woman's death to establish whether it was caused by drowning or linked to a separate health issue.
The woman, who has not been named, was reportedly staying at the nearby Sandos El Greco Hotel, a four-star adults-only beachfront resort.
Recent similar incident in Portugal
The incident comes days after a British man was found dead at a beach on Portugal's Algarve. Lifeguards spotted the 58-year-old floating in the water at Pintadinho beach last Wednesday.
The man was brought to shore where resuscitation attempts failed, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson for Portugal's National Maritime Authority said the causes of the incident remain unknown, but there is no suggestion it is being treated as a crime.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the victim of a British woman who has died in Spain."
