Thousands of passengers faced travel disruption after all flights were suspended from Birmingham Airport on Wednesday following an incident involving a light aircraft. The runway reopened around 8pm, but delays continued as flights were diverted or cancelled.
The incident occurred around 1pm when a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, operated by Woodgate Aviation, experienced landing gear problems while en route to Belfast. The aircraft returned to Birmingham and made an emergency landing, during which the main undercarriage collapsed. Three people on board were assessed at the scene and discharged with minor injuries.
Birmingham Airport, the UK's seventh busiest, had seen a 12% increase in passenger numbers in 2024, reaching 12.85 million. The airport operator apologised for the disruption and advised passengers to check with their airlines for updated flight information.
