Birmingham airport is returning to normal after a suspicious vehicle prompted a partial evacuation and grounded flights on Wednesday. West Midlands police confirmed the vehicle was deemed safe following a search by an explosive ordnance disposal team.
The airport apologised for disruption but said safety was its top priority. Passengers were initially told to stay away, with many escorted to the nearby National Exhibition Centre. Police tape cordoned off the area as crowds waited.
West Midlands fire service and ambulance crews attended as a precaution. The airport later advised passengers to return and check flight information, though delays of over two hours were reported on departures boards.
Some passengers were stuck on planes after landing. The airport said operations were resuming with minimal disruption, but further delays were expected for several hours.
