Incident Details

The Airbus A320, operating flight BA919 from Dusseldorf, suffered an air data systems failure during its approach to Heathrow Airport. The first officer attempted to fix the problem but failed, leading the captain to intervene.

An unnamed source described the event as "the most serious ‘near miss’ in the UK in years".

Pilot Action and Aftermath

The source added: "To recover from this position is difficult, especially so low to the ground. It is unheard of for a captain to physically intervene in the cockpit."

The captain is reportedly on "stress leave" as a result of the incident.

Investigation

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched a probe into the serious incident. A British Airways spokesperson said: "We're assisting the AAIB with its investigation and are legally unable to comment further at this stage."
