Arizona Developer and Wife Killed in Fiery Marana Airport Plane Crash
A prominent Arizona businessman and his wife have been identified as the victims of a devastating plane crash that saw their aircraft slide off the runway and erupt in flames. Chris Sheafe, a well-known regional developer, and his wife Jacque died in the incident around 6:50 PM on Wednesday at Marana Regional Airport, located approximately 20 miles northwest of Tucson.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The Piper P32R carrying the couple veered off the runway and burst into flames, resulting in their deaths, according to Marana Mayor Jon Post. The Marana Police Department confirmed that no other individuals were injured and no additional aircraft were involved. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) disclosed that the aircraft, registered as N4190E, had departed from Springerville Municipal Airport prior to the crash. Flight tracking data indicated the plane left Springerville around 3:52 PM and landed in Marana slightly over two hours later.
Victims' Backgrounds and Community Impact
Chris Sheafe was a significant figure in Tucson's development scene, responsible for numerous commercial and residential projects. His notable work included the upscale Ventana Country Club golf resort and the exclusive Rancho del Lago gated community, where homes can exceed $500,000. Jacque Sheafe had been employed as a sales consultant at PulteGroup since 2010, according to her public LinkedIn profile. The couple had recently traveled to Indianapolis to support the University of Arizona's basketball team in the NCAA men's tournament.
Airport Conditions and Investigation
Marana spokesperson Vic Hathaway explained that the crash occurred on the airport's shorter runway, as the main runway is currently under construction. The airport was temporarily closed following the incident but reopened late on Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash. This tragic event marks the second deadly incident at the small Arizona airport in just over a year, following a midair collision that claimed two lives last February.
Community and Official Reactions
Arizona Representative Juan Ciscomani expressed deep sadness, remembering Chris Sheafe as a dear friend and a wise, thoughtful man who generously contributed to his community. Ciscomani highlighted Sheafe's decades of work in homebuilding and his role in shaping Tucson's hospitality industry through projects like the Loews Ventana Canyon Hotel. A longtime friend, Bill Assenmacher, described Chris as a respected gentleman and a wonderful human being, noting Jacque's background in interior design and their beautifully maintained home.
Marana officials emphasized their commitment to airport safety, with plans for a new control tower next year. The Marana Police Department stated that positive identification of the victims and next-of-kin notifications are pending before releasing further information. The FAA records list the aircraft's owner as 4190E LLC, a limited liability company based in Tucson, rather than an individual.
