BT has delivered a stark warning to households and businesses across the UK still relying on old-fashioned landline telephones. The telecommunications giant is urging customers to upgrade to digital services before the impending nationwide switch-off of traditional copper wire systems.
The Countdown to Disconnection
With the digital revolution in full swing, BT is accelerating its plans to phase out the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) that has served Britain for decades. The company confirms that all analogue landlines will be switched off by December 2025, but many areas will see services terminated much sooner.
Who's Affected?
If you still use any of the following services, you'll need to take action:
- Traditional landline telephones
- Alarm systems connected to phone lines
- Fax machines
- Payment terminals using landlines
- Lift emergency lines
Why the Change?
The shift to digital Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology offers numerous benefits:
- Better call quality: Crystal-clear audio without interference
- Enhanced features: Call forwarding, voicemail to email, and more
- Future-proof: Supports emerging technologies
- Reliability: Less prone to weather-related disruptions
What You Need to Do
BT advises customers to:
- Check if your area has already begun the transition
- Contact BT or your service provider about upgrading
- Ensure you have a reliable broadband connection
- Consider battery backup options for power outages
"We're committed to making this transition as smooth as possible," a BT spokesperson said. "But customers need to act now to avoid service disruption."
