BT Landline Price Hike: Thousands Face £1 Monthly Increase from March 31
BT Landline Price Hike: £1 Monthly Increase from March 31

BT Implements Landline Price Increase for Thousands of Customers

Thousands of BT customers are bracing for a price rise set to take effect in just days. The telecoms giant has announced an increase in line rental fees for landline-only customers, with changes kicking in from March 31, 2026.

Details of the Price Adjustment

BT is raising the monthly line rental cost by £1, equating to an additional £12 annually. Specifically, the Standard Line Rental will climb from £12.09 to £13.09 per month, while Line Rental Plus will increase from £14.09 to £15.09 per month. The company has proactively contacted all affected customers to inform them of this adjustment.

Notably, call plan charges will remain unchanged for 12 months following the implementation date. This move coincides with the expiration of a five-year voluntary agreement between BT and industry regulator Ofcom, which had extended price protections for voice-only landline customers until March 2026.

BT's Statement and Industry Context

A BT spokesperson explained, "From 31st March 2026, landline only customers who do not have broadband with BT or another provider will see their monthly line rental price increase by £1." They emphasized the company's commitment to maintaining reliable phone services with clear pricing and robust customer support.

This development occurs against a backdrop of regulatory shifts in the telecoms sector. Mobile and broadband providers are now prohibited from linking mid-contract price rises to inflation; instead, they must disclose increases in "pounds and pence." However, consumer advocates, including Martin Lewis, have criticized some firms for allegedly circumventing these rules by announcing larger hikes than initially indicated.

In response, major telecom companies recently adopted a new Telecoms Consumer Charter, mandating upfront clarity on future price changes to enhance consumer protection.

Tips for Managing Telecom Costs

For customers seeking to mitigate rising expenses, consider the following strategies:

  • If you are out of contract, you may be overpaying. Start by comparing prices online to identify better deals.
  • Assess your usage patterns—many individuals pay for higher allowances in minutes, texts, or broadband speeds that they do not fully utilize.
  • Explore switching to a new provider or negotiating with your current one for a more favourable package.
  • Check eligibility for social tariffs if you claim benefits, as these can offer significant savings.

By staying informed and proactive, consumers can navigate these price adjustments more effectively and potentially reduce their overall telecom expenditures.
