Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini has put potential transfer suitors on red alert by admitting he would like to move abroad 'one day' to 'learn new things and concepts'. Newcastle United were heavily linked with a move for the Italian international back in the summer of 2025, with former head of recruitment Steve Nickson known to be a big fan of the 22-year-old.
Scalvini's future comments
Nickson, who left Tyneside this summer to take up a sporting director role at Wrexham, was a fan of Scalvini's prowess on the ball as well as his aerial presence. The defender has established himself as a regular at both club level and international level.
Scalvini's age profile fits Newcastle's new transfer model under sporting director Ross Wilson, and he has already amassed experience at international level, as well as in the Champions League and Europa League.
New contract and comments
Despite Scalvini penning a new contract at the New Balance Arena until the summer of 2031 just last month, his recent comments would surely have caught the attention of Newcastle and other interested parties.
"I've always been there, and I've extended because I've always felt good," Scalvini said during a press conference while representing the Italian national team. "At the same time, I understand those who change clubs and go abroad. One day I'd like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I'm already doing it at Atalanta."
Newcastle's defensive plans
Newcastle will almost certainly be in the market for a new centre-half next summer, but whether they move for Scalvini, who has won the Europa League and Supercoppa Italia with the Bergamo outfit, remains to be seen.
Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are both 34 years of age and both out of contract next summer, although the Magpies are believed to have an option to extend the stay of Burn, who was recently appointed captain of the club, by another year. Schar's departure would open up space for a right-sided centre-half in the squad to compete with Malick Thiaw, and Scalvini is surely going to be high on the radar of a number of clubs in the summer of 2027.
