Manchester United are weighing up a surprise move for Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic as Joshua Zirkzee edges closer to an exit before next week's transfer deadline, according to reports.
Zirkzee has struggled to settle since joining United from Bologna in the summer of 2024, largely playing a bit-part role. He is reportedly closing in on a return to Serie A, with Fiorentina pushing to sign him on loan until the end of the season. Advanced talks are said to be underway over a deal that includes a £4.2m fee, though it remains unclear whether Fiorentina would have an option to buy at the end of the temporary spell.
Matanovic emerges as primary target
If the move goes through, United could launch a late swoop for Matanovic, who has become a primary target for the Red Devils ahead of Zirkzee's likely departure, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a productive debut campaign with Freiburg last season after arriving in a £6.9m deal from Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 15 goals in all competitions. Standing at six feet and five inches tall, he would provide additional cover for Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha at United.

However, United are not the only club in the race for the forward, with Tottenham also harbouring an interest. Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly keen to add more height to his frontline despite already having Dominic Solanke and Richarlison at his disposal.
It remains to be seen if United can sign Matanovic before the window closes, with just four days remaining until the deadline. The club are also in the market for a new left-back to cover for Luke Shaw, their only real option in the position. Newcastle defender Lewis Hall is thought to be United's top target, but the Magpies are expected to be reluctant to sell with so little time left in the window.
