Celtic are in talks to sign PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joel Van den Berg, with the 19-year-old pulled from his youth team's lineup for tonight's match.
The Hoops are reportedly in Eindhoven attempting to finalise a deal for the 6'2 central midfielder, who was due to start for PSV's 'Jong' side against RKC Waalwijk in the Eerste Divisie. Dutch outlet VI.nl claim Van den Berg is keen on the move to Glasgow.
Rising through the ranks
Van den Berg made just six top-team appearances for the Dutch champions last season. He began his career in Ajax's academy before turning professional with Vitesse Arnhem, then moved to PSV to play with their U18s. He has since been rising through the ranks and is on the brink of the first team, though the chance to play more regularly at Celtic Park is thought to appeal to him.
He still has two years left on his current contract with the Dutch giants.
Celtic's summer recruitment
Celtic have already added German midfielder Mika Baur to their ranks this summer as they look to fill the void left by Arne Engels' £22million exit to West Ham. They have also been heavily linked with Bosnian World Cup star Ermin Mahmic, Canada's Niko Sigur, and Torino's Gvidas Ginietas. A successful capture of Van den Berg does not necessarily mean his arrival will be instead of any of those targets.
Despite missing out on a Champions League jackpot after a collapse against LASK in midweek, boss Martin O'Neill reassured fans that the club are still trying to strengthen. He said: "I think that's not the case. We're still trying to get some players in. We need a few to supplement the squad with the European matches we have coming up."
