Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced global outages lasting just over an hour on Thursday, affecting users in the UK, US and Asia. According to Downdetector.com, more than 47,000 US users reported access issues with X and X Pro, while British users were also unable to view posts, encountering a message reading 'Welcome to X!'.
The hashtag #TwitterDown began trending shortly after reports emerged, but the disruption was short-lived, with service restored after approximately one hour. X, owned by Elon Musk, has been contacted for comment. Musk acquired the platform for $44bn (£35bn) last year.
Since the takeover, X has faced a loss of advertising revenue and accusations of allowing antisemitic content alongside advertisements. The company has sued the left-leaning pressure group Media Matters for America over these claims. Last month, Musk criticised advertisers that left the platform, warning they could 'kill' X.
Additionally, the European Union has formally accused X of breaching its rules on countering illegal content and disinformation, adding to the platform's ongoing challenges.
