Michael Barrymore, the former king of Saturday night entertainment, has found a new audience on TikTok, where he has amassed 1.7 million followers by poking fun at his own career downfall. The 71-year-old, whose showbiz career ended abruptly after a tragic incident at his home in 2001, now shares viral videos, life advice, and glimpses into his daily life on the platform.
Barrymore's TikTok content includes recreating popular trends, such as a Peppa Pig-inspired video where he faints, captioned: "When you check your bank balance after being out of work for 20 years." He also posts old clips from his ITV shows, including 'Kids Say The Funniest Things' and 'Strike It Rich', and shares videos from the perspective of his Jack Russell, Dave.
In addition to his social media presence, Barrymore has returned to the stage as co-director of the production 'Laurel & Chaplin' at the Cambridge Theatre in London. His comeback follows years out of the spotlight after Stuart Lubbock was found dead in his swimming pool following a house party in 2001. Barrymore lost his ITV job soon after and later appeared on 'Celebrity Big Brother' in 2006, finishing second.
