The World Boxing Council (WBC) has expelled Ryan Garcia after the boxer made repeated racial slurs against Black people and disparaged Muslims during a livestream on social media. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced the decision on X, stating, 'Exercising my authority … I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization. We reject any form of discrimination.'
Garcia issued a brief apology on X, writing, 'I was trolling I want all the killing to stop. I love everyone sorry if I offended you.' The expulsion follows a series of incidents, including a one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission last month after Garcia tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. His victory over Devin Haney in April was overturned to a no-contest.
Concerns about Garcia's erratic behaviour had surfaced before the Haney fight, with conspiracy theories and apparent cries for help on social media. He later denied any issues, saying, 'Come on, guys, you really thought I was crazy?' In June, Garcia was arrested for allegedly causing $15,000 in damage at a Beverly Hills hotel. His attorney cited 'an extraordinarily challenging time for Ryan, as he has been grappling with devastating news regarding his mother’s health.'
Garcia's family released a statement distancing themselves from his prejudiced comments. 'Our family unequivocally does not support any statements he has made regarding race or religion – these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised,' the statement said. 'Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being.'
