Tesla recalls 20,000+ vehicles over headlight crash risk

Tesla has recalled 20,349 vehicles in the US due to a crash risk linked to overly bright headlights. The affected models are the Model 3 (2017-2023) and Model Y (2020-2023).

Headlight issue violates safety standard

The recall stems from headlight low beams that may exceed maximum light output, potentially reducing visibility for oncoming drivers and increasing the likelihood of a crash. As a result, these vehicles do not comply with FMVSS regulation number 108 (Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment).

Fix and notification timeline

A fix is currently being developed, and owner notification letters are reportedly being sent out in mid-September.

Separate Toyota recall

In a separate action, Toyota is recalling more than 508,000 Camry Hybrid vehicles over concerns that an instrument cluster could fail to display critical safety information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that this issue could also increase the risk of a crash.

The affected Toyota vehicles are from product years 2025 and 2026. The issue could potentially deactivate hazard lights, turn signals, the seatbelt warning system, and smart key reminders. Car dealers will update the car software for free and send letters to all owners, also in September.
