Daniel Sturridge has said Liverpool's transfer priority should be a defensive midfielder rather than a left-winger, as the club continues to be linked with Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.
With just over a week until transfer Deadline Day, Liverpool have been linked with reinforcements, but Sturridge believes his former side missed a trick by not signing Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangare.
Sturridge's analysis of Liverpool's midfield
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool were caught on the counter-attack in the fourth minute of Sunday's 2-2 draw against Newcastle, Sturridge said: "I think the team needs a defensive midfielder, personally."
"We have been talking about a defensive midfielder at Liverpool for the last three years and I think [Ryan] Gravenberch coming into the team and playing consistently and Liverpool winning the Premier League sort of changed that philosophy."
"But if you actually analyse the midfield, then they're all naturally more attacking players. [Dominik] Szoboszlai is probably better as a No10. He strikes the ball well, he sets the press very well and all in all I think he's a more offensive minded player when you talk about the counter attack and the goal they conceded."
Verdict on Barcola and Minteh
As Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola looks to bolster his forward line before the window closes, Sturridge has suggested Brighton's Yankuba Minteh would be a better fit than Barcola due to the existing options at Liverpool.
"We're looking at the reports and it's saying 'left-winger' for me you can play [Cody] Gakpo, you've got [Florian] Wirtz and [Rio] Ngumoha," Sturridge added.
"If I'm buying a winger at Liverpool, I'm rather go right-wing because I've got options on the left. I'm not sure about bringing in another left-winger, personally."
Liverpool are back in action on Saturday at home to Nottingham Forest in what will be the final game before transfer Deadline Day.
