Scots are being offered the chance to name a gritter that will take to the streets this winter, as BEAR Scotland launches its annual gritter naming competition. The organisation is inviting witty and winter-themed name suggestions for its fleet of more than 115 gritters serving the South East and North West trunk road networks.
The gritters play a crucial role during colder months, operating around the clock to treat roads ahead of frost and ice, and helping to clear snow when conditions worsen. Past winning names have included 'Chilly Connolly', a tribute to comedy legend Billy Connolly, as well as 'Snow Scotland Snow Party' and 'Gritty Gritty Bang Bang'.
Previous Winners and Creative Entries
BEAR Scotland has revealed some of the previous winning names that are preparing to head out as part of its 2026/27 winter service. These include 'SNOW SCOTLAND SNOW PARTY', 'I'VE GRIT A CRUSH ON YOU', 'BASIL SALTY', 'GRITTY GRITTY BANG BANG', 'SIR ANDY FLURRY' and 'BRINE FREEEEZE'.
The organisation said: "Our fleet of more than 115 winter vehicles helps keep roads across Scotland moving throughout winter, operating around the clock to treat roads ahead of frost and ice, and helping clear snow. We're looking for witty, creative winter-themed names for our gritter fleet across the South East and North West of Scotland."
How to Enter
Anyone wanting to get involved can submit their suggestions through the official BEAR Scotland gritter naming competition form on their official website. There is no entry fee, and people can submit multiple suggestions. Children under 18 can also take part, with a teacher, parent or guardian able to submit an entry on their behalf.
Entries are open until 11.59pm on Friday, September 11, giving just over two weeks to come up with a suitably frosty pun. Whether inspired by Scottish culture, winter weather, famous faces or a road-related joke, the winning names could soon be travelling across Scotland's roads when the cold weather arrives.
